CLEVELAND — Punxsutawney Phil should’ve warned us we’d have more than six more weeks of winter.
For the second consecutive day, the Guardians and White Sox were forced to postpone their matchup for Tuesday night due to rain, snow, wind and cold temperatures. This time, the contest will be made up as a traditional doubleheader on Wednesday, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET.
“Playing tonight, you start to worry about hurting somebody or playing the game when you shouldn’t,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “Part of it was some of [the ground] might’ve been frozen, where if it did thaw, with the wind that was going to kick up, it was going to be pretty miserable. To the point where you start to worry about your guys.”
Anyone who had tickets to Tuesday’s originally scheduled contest will be able to exchange them for admission to one of five game options, including Wednesday’s doubleheader. Fans who already had tickets to Wednesday’s 6:10 p.m. game can attend both games of the doubleheader and will have the same seat for both contests. Fans who would like to exchange their tickets for another game must do so by June 28 at 5 p.m. via CLEGuardians.com/mytickets.
Once again, the Guardians will push all their starters back one game. Shane Bieber is now slated to take the ball in Game 1 on Wednesday against White Sox southpaw Dallas Keuchel. In the nightcap, Triston McKenzie will toe the rubber against righty Jimmy Lambert. That leaves a Zach Plesac-Dylan Cease matchup for the series finale at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday.
“We’re going to have 27 innings potentially in 27 hours, which isn’t perfect,” Francona said. “But if you’re supposed to play, you play. If you’re not, you don’t. I think everybody kind of came to the same conclusion.”
