Tuesday night’s showdown between No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 2 UCLA marks just the eighth time in the 21st century that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams have squared off in the regular season. With the Bulldogs taking a 45-25 lead into halftime, it appears the AP Top 25 voters had them in the correct order. Gonzaga wasted no time putting the nation on notice by taking a commanding 23-point lead midway through the first half behind a suffocating defensive effort and diverse offensive attack.
Senior guard Andrew Nembhard led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the half as they opened up a commanding lead despite a quiet start from their leading scorer Drew Timme. Freshman phenom Chet Holmgren also put his diverse arsenal of skills on display through the first 20 minutes. The 7-footer scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked three shots, and drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3:48 left in the half to stop a 6-0 UCLA run and put the Zags back ahead by 20.
