The Division 2’s ‘Codename Nightmare’ event is canceled

“Codename Nightmare,” a special gameplay event that Ubisoft teased for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 back in September, has been cancelled. In a live-streamed discussion yesterday, a developer with Massive Entertainment implied that disruptions caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic were partly to blame.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone; it’s been a tough year for us as well, and one of the consequences of that is we have had to make changes in our plan,” Yannick Banchereau, the studio’s associate creative director, says at 13:20 in the video above.

Codename Nightmare will now be just an apparel event — which means players have a limited time to collect outfit items and skins. That will get going midway through The Division 2’s Season 4, or on Feb. 2 to be more precise.

“We decided to refocus Codename Nightmare on apparel only,” Banchereau said. “It’s going to be a collection of really good looking, unique outfits that you’ll get to unlock in Season 4.”

Codename Nightmare was teased during the Ubisoft Forward event in September, at the end of a trailer for the “The Summit,” a game mode that rolled out on Sept. 22. Massive Entertainment shared few other details about Codename Nightmare, except that it would be set in the largely unused Kenley College area of The Division 2’s Washington D.C., and would begin this winter.

Banchereau added that the Feb. 2 patch that brings the Codename Nightmare apparel will also unlock the framerate on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, meaning those consoles will be able to deliver 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.

Season 4 of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 begins with a title update rolling out on Dec. 8, to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. An update Ubisoft posted yesterday says it will star Faye Lau, an NPC from the first Division who went rogue in last spring’s Warlords of New York event. The Dec. 8 update will also deliver improvements to The Summit, a new seasonal outfit and gear set, plus a new skill for the Pulse tool, which reveals enemies’ weak points.
