The daily total of new coronavirus cases continued to climb in the U.S., prompting some states to impose new measures to counter rising levels of infections.
New cases in the U.S. topped 50,000 for the first time in five days on Wednesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. More than 7.5 million cases have been reported in the U.S. since the beginning of the pandemic, and the nation’s death toll is now approaching 212,000.
- The U.S. added more than 50,000 coronavirus cases.
- Total cases in the U.S. climbed past 7.5 million.
- The assistant commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps tested positive for Covid-19.
Cases are rising across a large majority of U.S. states seven months into the pandemic.
The number of new confirmed cases grew at a faster pace over the past seven days than during the week prior in 40 states and Washington, D.C., according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins data. Alaska, Kentucky, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming have seen cases increase by more than 10% over the past seven days. In Montana, cases accelerated 22.9% over that same period.
On Wednesday, seven states reported more than 2,000 new cases, including California, Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. Kentucky reported 2,398, all but 926 of which came from a backlog of data over the past few weeks.
Utah’s seven-day average of new cases hit a high of 1,044 and a record 226 people were hospitalized, according to state data for Wednesday, as vice presidential candidates debated in Salt Lake City that evening.
Several forecasts analyzed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate there may be increases in hospitalizations across the U.S. over the next four weeks.
New restrictions: In Boston, after new virus cases rose by more than 4%, officials there said Wednesday they would suspend the reopening of public schools. In Wisconsin, Gov. Tony Evers issued an emergency order limiting indoor public gatherings to no more than 25% of a building or room’s legal occupancy, after declaring that the state had become a “hot spot” for new infections.
